4 Signs You Have a Vole Problem
Visible Surface Runways
One of the most common telltale signs of vole activity is the presence of narrow, beaten-down runways across your lawn. These trails, usually about 1 to 2 inches wide, are formed as voles often repeatedly travel the same paths while foraging. You’ll can also notice them after snow melts or when the grass is matted down in early spring, but they can be present most seasons, and this is one of the easiest ways to spot them.
Gnawed Bark on Trees and Shrubs
Voles love to chew, and they often target the base of shrubs and young trees. If you see irregular gnaw marks or missing bark near ground level, it’s likely not a coincidence, especially if you see marks in a ring around the trunk, as that is a strong sign voles have been feeding there and they can severely damage or even kill plants this way.
